Overview

Description:
In 2023, APS was commissioned to design a new Multipurpose Hall for Hellenic Academy in Harare. Positioned at the school’s main entrance, the hall is intended as the heart of the campus—a vibrant space for assemblies, performances, and community events. The design bridges the school’s Greek-inspired heritage with a contemporary architectural language, using clean lines, natural light, and a considered material palette to create a welcoming and inspiring environment.

Challenge:
The hall needed to serve a wide range of activities, from large-scale performances to smaller educational and community programs, while maintaining exceptional acoustic quality and clear sightlines. Additionally, the project required a carefully considered phased approach: Phase 1 delivers a fully operational auditorium with mezzanine seating, stage, and backstage facilities, while Phase 2 will add a foyer, ablutions, offices, and flexible spaces for exhibitions or classrooms. The design needed to ensure Phase 1 functions independently, while Phase 2 could be integrated seamlessly in the future.

Solution:
APS worked closely with theatre and acoustic specialists to create a hall that is both technically precise and welcoming. The auditorium’s proportions, mezzanine, and stage layout provide optimal acoustics and visibility, while circulation and gathering areas are designed to encourage informal interaction. Materials, detailing, and finishes complement the school’s existing architecture, offering a contemporary expression that respects its heritage. By structuring the project in phases, the hall is ready to serve the school immediately while allowing future expansion with minimal disruption, establishing a long-term civic and educational focal point for the Academy.
