Overview

Description: In 2000 APS were commissioned to design a new sports pavilion for Chisipite Senior School to provide much needed ablutions and general amenity and celebrate the Schools 60th anniversary.

Challenge: The challenge was to provide a multifunctional pavilion on a sloped site adjacent to existing sports fields and the 25m swimming pool. The pavilion was to be as multifunctional as possible, and our brief was that it should be used as a catering hub, spectators platform, marimba store, ablution and change facilities, as well as respond to the nearby carpark and pick up area.

Solution: The site was chosen strategically relative to the nearby pool / fields so that the facility could cater to the sporting needs of the students, staff and spectators. The steep slope provided an opportunity for a double storey pavilion - the Architect responded to the level difference by providing for sheltered student pick up and drop off to the south, in conjunction with raised spectator pavilion and kitchenette to the north. light catering requirements during events are serviced by a kitchen and store in each wing. Whilst the ablutions, change rooms and marimba storage is accommodated neatly in the basement which is recessed into the ground. The pavilion design echo’s the Chisipite colonial vernacular, and compliments the surrounding buildings with its low maintenance face brick facade, and its corrugated profiled steel roof.
