Overview

Description: In 2017 APS were commissioned by the Client to design a new bedroom wing and a veranda / entertainment extension, incorporating an outside braai, a living room and dining room as well as a bar, and kitchen re-design.

Challenge: There was an existing swimming pool to the north, and a boundary wall to the east, so the challenge in this instance, was to work within the framework of the existing structures and create a compact entertainment area that was seamlessly integrated with the main house.

Solution: The client loved the idea of outside living and entertaining, so the roof line of the main house was extruded to the building line extents, providing the maximum permissible space for a bar, and outdoor lounge, complete with fireplace and outdoor TV. To the north a single pitch veranda extension links the pool to the braai area, and provides shading to the kitchen, allowing for many different dining configurations. The Bar is the centre piece of the entertainment area and opens up to the patio by means of broad concertina doors. The built in braai / chimney is linked to the entertainment area, but is distant enough to ensure that the smoke does not become a nuisance. Concrete benches provide seating outside, as well as a retaining wall to the slightly higher garden. Michelle Wilkins, from MAIA Design, brought the whole space to life with tasteful hard and soft interior design.
