Overview
Description: In 2024, APS were commissioned to design a 10 unit (240m2) cluster housing development in Chisipite, Harare for a private client.
Phase 1 (5 units): Completed October 2025
Phase 2 (5 units): Due for completion Q1, 2026
Challenge: The clients design brief was to create a contemporary interpretation of the 'Cape Dutch' farm house. The Clients intention was to rent to high end tenants, and so the emphasis was on robust and long lasting finishes, and on landscaped common areas which would encourage long term tenancy.
Solution: In consideration of the masterplan, we advised the Client to keep two out of the twelve potential units undeveloped, and prioritise for community open space (playground, park, paddle court, gym and clubhoulse).
Care was taken with the design language of the modern 'Cape Dutch' typology, to integrate principles of symetry, high ceilings, exposed trusses, rustic materials, and tall doors and windows.
The open plan lounge and dining areas can be separated from the kitchen by way of a top hung, sliding farmhouse screen doors, and when entertaining the link between inside and outside is enhanced with full length consertina glazed doors that link to the generous veranda.
The pallet of interior design (fixed and loose) finishes was expertly curated by Interior Designers, Meraki from South Africa, and their subsidiary company supplied all cabinetry and granite countertops which were transported as flat pack and errected on site.
